Friends of Fog Lane Park
We are a group of volunteers, made up of residents from around Fog Lane Park, park users, and Manchester city councillors who represent the wards surrounding the park.
We aim to help with the upkeep of the park, improve its facilities, hold regular events, celebrate its history, and work more generally with park users and other stakeholders to make the park environment as pleasant and as enjoyable as we can.
We hold meetings every two months to discuss park matters and plan future activities. Details of upcoming meetings can be found on the Events page.
We also organise a series of volunteer litter picks every other month to help maintain the condition of the park. If you want to join in with our next litter-pick you can also find details on our Events page.
Volunteering
There are lots of opportunities to volunteer in the park, including a regular Wednesday morning gardening group that meets at 10:00am at the side of the park café.
The booklet in the link below was presented to the judges who came to look at Fog Lane Park for the RHS It’s Your Neighbour judging in June. The booklet covers everything that was done by the Friends group and other volunteers over the previous year. The volunteers achieved Outstanding in the RHS Britain in Bloom It’s Your Neighbourhood awards with a mark of 92 out of 100. This was fifth consecutive year of achieving an Outstanding award.
Gardening Group
The gardening group began back in 2018, with just three volunteers who first started by tackling the overgrown rosebeds near to the Old Broadway entrance. We then moved on to the raised beds near the ponds and the sensory garden. When Covid happened in 2020, our volunteer numbers increased, as more people were working from home and visiting the park. Since then, we have moved on to the flower beds near the Fog Lane entrance and are currently developing what used to be the wildflower bed. In 2025 the gardening group completed an incredible total of 460 volunteer hours.
The group is still quite small, with a maximum of eight people, so we are always happy to welcome new members. You do not need any knowledge or experience, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get very muddy. We provide all the equipment and gloves. The gardening group meets on Wednesdays from 10am until 12noon. We meet at the door on the right hand side of the café, as this is where all our gardening equipment is stored. If you are free on a Wednesday, you would be very welcome to join us.
Litter Pick
Litter picks happen on the second Saturday of alternate months, from 10am-12 noon. You can find the date of the next litter pick on our Events page.
We borrow all the equipment from Keep Manchester Tidy, including gloves and litter picks for children, as well as adults. We hand out the equipment by the bike racks next to the cafe. You don't need to do the full two hours, even half an hour can make a big difference, so please come along and give us a hand.
Corporate Volunteers
Every year we have a number of groups from local companies and organisations volunteer their time to help in the park. The work is arranged in collaboration with the Manchester City Council parks department, and helps to maintain the fabric of the park. The photos show hardworking volunteers from Avison Young who did incredible work in September 2025 to improve the pond edges.
